From Struggles to Success: Samuel's Journey of Transformation

Samuel overcame early educational challenges with the help of a dedicated teacher. He found confidence through a supportive environment to excel in his course Certificate I in Work Education (General Stream) 22566VIC as an outstanding student.

Samuel's Initial Hurdles

Samuel’s story is a tale of transformation and triumph against the odds. As a child, he was troubled and struggled with many aspects of growing up. His parents were lenient, letting Samuel get away with a lot. By the time he reached year nine, Samuel had barely read a book, and it seemed like the goal was just to push him through the school system and get him out into the world.

Finding Direction: The Teacher Who Made a Difference

For five years, Samuel was assisted by the Disability Forensic Assessment and Treatment Service (DFATS). In his time there, Sam felt lost and envious of those around him who seemed to grasp what he couldn't. Samuel felt adrift, lacking direction and motivation. It was during this turbulent time that he met a teacher who would change his life—Louis.

Samuel recounts how discovering his capabilities for learning with Louis’s support made a life-changing impact on him:

Louis was different. He looked at me and said, “I have confidence in you, Sam. I know we can get through this together.” At first, Samuel didn't believe him, he brushed off Louis’s words, thinking he was just another teacher with empty promises. But something about Louis’s unwavering belief in Samuel started to sink in. Over time, Samuel began to listen to Louis’s encouragement and without realising it, he found he was getting an education.

The Transformative Impact of a Dedicated Teacher

To Samuel, Louis didn't just teach; he inspired. He saw the potential in Samuel that he couldn't see in himself. Through patience and persistence, Louis helped Samuel realise his capability for learning and achieving. For the first time, Samuel felt the joy of going to school and the support of having someone genuinely invested in his learning experience.

Through Louis's encouragement and belief, Samuel transformed from a struggling student to someone who found the value in education and the confidence to pursue it - he changed Sam’s entire outlook on what he could achieve and helped made his life easier.

Until I met Louis at Melbourne Polytechnic...I know that he could change somebody's life, he changed mine. He helped me make life easier and I got a lot of respect for him.
