Overview
The Safe Working Practice (SWP) Assessment tests your ability to undertake safe electrical working practices. It is part of the Licensed Electrician's Assessment (LEA) that all electrical workers must pass to be issued the A Grade Electrical Licence by Energy Safe Victoria (ESV).
The LEA assessments are:
- Licensed Electrician Theory (LET) Assessment
- Safe Working Practice (SWP) Assessment
- Licensed Electrician Practical (LEP) Assessment
About the LEA Safe Working Practice (SWP) Assessment
The LEA Safe Working Practice Assessment is 50 minute asssessment (including reading time). It assesses your ability to safely isolate, disconnect then reconnect electrical equipment and associated wiring .

LEA paper and face-to-face reviews
Participants who are unsuccessful in passing an assessment may apply to receive a paper based view.
A paper review has to be issued before a face-to-face can be organised.

Transfers and Refunds
A refund or transfer is only possible if you apply at least 5 business days prior to the course commencing. A standard handling charge of 10% of the advertised course fee will be deducted from each refund. Requests for refunds or transfers made within five business days of the course start date will not be eligible.
Requirements
To be eligible to sit the LEA you need:- an eligibility letter from your Training organisation that identifies:
- all relevant units of competency have been achieved
- profiling requirements have been met OR
- an Australian Trades Recognition Certificate OR
- an Electrician (Supervised) Worker’s Licence (ES licence) OR
- a letter from Energy Safe Victoria (ESV)
When booking your LEA assessment resit, please ensure you have met the Energy Safe Victoria guidelines of waiting 2 weeks between your assessments.
Please Note: Your enrolment will not be completed until the following requirements are met:
- One of the above eligibility requirements is provided.
- The number of times you have sat your assessment.
- Are you attending or have you attended a tutorial?

On the day of your assessment, you MUST bring a copy of the eligibility letter and photo identification to show the assessor.
If you do not present a copy of the eligibility letter and photo identification to the assessor, you will NOT be permitted to sit the assessment and you will NOT be eligible for a refund
Materials
You must wear long sleeves, long pants and covered footwear as per section 11 of AS/NZS 4836:2023. If you do not wear the correct clothing, you will be denied entry.
You must also bring:
- AS/NZS 4836 Safe working on or near low voltage electrical installation and equipment (current version incorporating all amendments).
- The original printed copy of your eligibility letter, TRA certificate or L licence
- Photo identification
- A recently tested Insulation Resistance Tester. The criteria for the testers is analogue, no indication for Pass or Fail, minimum of 250V/500V scale, minimum 2x continuity scales, true moving coil meter
As of the 1st January 2019, All SWP candidates to supply their own gloves: Inner insulated rubber glove rated 650V and labelled to meet Australian Standard AS2225 or relevant international standard IEC903. Outer gloves are to be leather flame resistant mechanical protection. Please ensure that your leather mechanical (outer glove) is large enough to go over your inner glove. If your gloves are not suitable, you will not be permitted to sit your assessment.
